Strategies for Teaching Writing
1. Demonstrate correct letter formation
You should teach children the correct letter formation from when they first start writing.
To help you using this, a letter with numbered arrows showing where to start and where you should finish each letter is provided, followed closely by grey letters that can be traced and then a line that is blank which the child must copy the best letter forms.
Studies have shown that if you first “say” the appropriate letter formation while demonstating it for the child/ren, that they learn their letters more easily. Then let them perform some same, to make sure learning that is multi-sensory.
As an example, demonstrate the letter ‘a’ and say: “Around, down and up.” Practice floating around a times that are few then with a finger in writing (or sandpaper) and lastly with a pencil in writing.
